'Cherokee Chief' Flowering Dogwood is one of the most celebrated of all flowering dogwood cultivars, prized for its exceptionally rich, deep rose-red bracts that are larger and more vividly colored than most other red dogwood varieties. In mid-spring, the bare branches are blanketed in stunning deep pink to ruby-red flower bracts that create a breathtaking display against the emerging foliage. Growing 20 to 25 feet tall with the classic broad, layered branching habit of the native dogwood, Cherokee Chief is a magnificent specimen tree for residential gardens and naturalized settings. The foliage turns attractive shades of red and burgundy in fall, and small red fruits develop in autumn, attracting birds. It thrives in partial shade to filtered sun and moist, well-drained, acidic soil.
