Black Tartarian Cherry is one of the oldest and most beloved sweet cherry varieties, prized for its large, heart-shaped, deep purple-black fruit with sweet, juicy dark flesh that ripens early in the cherry season. This vigorous, upright tree grows 20 to 30 feet tall and produces abundant crops year after year, with attractive white spring blossoms that are a feast for both the eyes and early pollinators. Black Tartarian is an excellent pollinator for other sweet cherry varieties and performs best in full sun with well-drained soil. The fruit is excellent for fresh eating, baking, and preserving, and ripens in early to mid-summer. Its combination of beautiful spring blooms, prolific fruiting, and outstanding cherry flavor make it a classic choice for home orchards.
