Cuprocyparis leylandii
Cupressocyparis leylandii, commonly known as Leyland cypress, is a fast-growing, evergreen conifer often used for hedging and privacy screens. It features dense, feathery, dark green foliage and a tall, narrow, columnar shape, making it ideal for creating quick visual barriers. This hybrid between Monterey cypress and Nootka cypress can grow up to 60 to 70 feet tall in ideal conditions, though it is typically kept trimmed to a manageable height. It thrives in full sun, tolerates a variety of soils, and is hardy in USDA zones 6 to 10. While highly effective for screening, it requires regular pruning to maintain size and shape and can become overwhelming in small spaces if left unchecked.
